Island Express is a grill and bakery located in Brooklyn, NY, serving Caribbean food made from traditional Guyanese recipes.
The brand was inspired by the story of Sybil Bernard – A Guyanese native, and mother of nine, who left her family and came to America in search of a better life. In America, she wrote home to her children every week, and worked multiple jobs until she saved enough money to bring her children over from Guyana to New York City. With the help of her children she was able to start a bakery out of her home and eventually opened her first store in Queens, NY in 1976.
Island Express is the fourth store inspired by Sybil Bernard and the first re-brand for the chain.
